Congratulations on getting your braces! We know having braces will take some time to get used to but don’t worry, you’ll feel back to your normal self in no time. We put together some tips that we hope you find useful throughout your orthodontic journey. These tips will help you maintain proper oral hygiene and prevent damage to your brackets or wires (which could potentially lengthen your treatment time!). Getting braces means you’ll need to beware of certain hard, sticky and crunchy foods that could damage your brackets and/or wires. Yes we know. It can be hard to give up some of these items but keep in mind it’s only temporary! You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy these restricted foods AFTER your braces come off.
Eating any of these restricted foods may cause problems which will result in extra visits to our office for repairs and ultimately extend your treatment time. If you have a question about a particular food, just ask Dr. Lovinggood or any of our team members.
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is always imporant but it’s ESPECIALLY important when you have braces. If plaque builds up on your teeth and around your braces, you could develop swollen gums, bad breath, cavities and discolored teeth. You should brush your teeth after every meal so make sure you bring a small toothbrush with you to school or work. With braces, your toothbrush will wear out faster so make sure you replace it when the bristles start to fray.
Flossing is a MUST but can be a little tricky at first. We’ll make sure you know exactly how to floss with braces before you leave our office. Floss threaders and waterpiks may come in handy!
